Two couponing moms. Thousands of dollars in what had to have been counterfeit coupons. Two suspicious CVS stores. Sounds like a quick investigation, right? Not so fast.
Two women in Ohio have been convicted of defrauding two CVS stores in their area with counterfeit printable coupons. 41-year-old Patricia Haller of Batavia and 31-year-old Maggie Damico of Liberty Township were found guilty of theft last week, in connection with defrauding a CVS store in West Chester, OH and nearby Sharonville, OH with 350 printed counterfeit coupons to get away with over $4,000 in products.
West Chester police believed the counterfeit coupons came from a private Facebook group and the women purchased them. The police stated the verbiage on the fake coupons were inconsistent with real manufacturer coupons.
Haller and Damico have since been arrested. In the West Chester case, Haller was ordered to pay $1895 in restitution (the value of the items bought with the fake coupons). Both women pleaded no contest to the charges against them. The judge reduced the charges to a single misdemeanor with a 180 day suspension and a $1000 fine, which will be reduced to $250 if they manage to stay out of trouble.
The ladies’ attorney tried to reason that Haller and Damico were victims, too. They were suburban housewives who were trying to save money using coupons for their families, and they ended up getting scammed when they bought coupons that turned out not to be counterfeit.
That reasoning didn’t convince the judge, in either case, to dismiss the women of their crime of counterfeit coupon use. And since the Sharonville case resulted in probation and community service, as compared to the suspended sentence and small fine they got in the West Chester case, they didn’t get off quite so easy for their second offense.
Both trials have come to a close, and they managed to avoid jail time not once but TWICE, but in the end didn’t get off scot free. They have been ordered to pay CVS back more than $12,000 for all the ill-gotten goods they got away with with their fake coupons.
Moral of the story folks? DO NOT BUY COUPONS! If you come across super high value coupons from unusual sources, do not take the bait. There are so many great deals that can be gotten the legitimate and HONEST way.
As the ol’ saying goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
