In the battle for better fast food, the latest and greatest announcement comes from Pizza Hut who has pledged to remove two chemical preservatives from it’s meats. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) or butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are both considered “safe” in terms of consumption by the Food & Drug Administration, however critics warn they should be avoided.
In addition, Pizza Hut also has announced a long term plan to remove chicken produced with antibiotics from its offerings and preservative laden cheeses. Claes Petersson, head of Food Innovation says, “If it doesn’t sound awesome, it shouldn’t be in our food.” Those are certainly words to live by, Thanks Peter!
This menu reevaluation has been a long time in the making but the new changes and plans have only recently been made public as increasingly educated consumers now raise concerns not only about the foods they put in their bodies, but also of connections between new drug resistant bacteria known as “Superbugs” as a result of overuse of antibiotics in our mass produced food supply.
