And so it begins – with minimum wage on the rise, fast food restaurants are employing machines to replace human workers. Wendy’s is leading the pack by installing over 6,000 self service kiosks in a large chunk of their restaurants during the second half of 2016. The remaining Wendy’s locations are franchises and ultimately the implementation of the kiosks will be determined by the owners. Basically this leave franchise owners with a BIG decision – hike up the cost of food to offset wage hikes or use the machines. We can expect McDonalds to follow suit over time.
In addition to the kiosks, Wendy’s will also fall in line with MacDonald’s and YUM! brands: Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC & more who offer labor saving mobile apps for ordering and payment. Something we have seen gaining popularity lately with mobile device use soaring.
Ouch – sounds like career fast food restaurant employees may need to start working on a back-up plan.
